The TBA National Hunt Committee Launch New Award
The Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association National Hunt Committee has launched a new award, to recognise those racecourses that support Mares Only races. There were seven courses who met the criteria set in 2010/11. In addition to a certificate, the TBA also offered £750 sponsorship towards another Mares Only race, either a Mares Only NH Flat Race, Hurdle Race or Steeple Chase, to be run this season or next.
The first course to take up this offer is Lingfield Park Racecourse, with Clerk of the Course, Neil Mackenzie-Ross saying “Lingfield Park were thrilled to receive this Award and it will certainly incentivise us to run more Mares Only races in the future. It is great to get support from the Industry.” The TBA Mares Only National Hunt Flat Race was due to be held at Lingfield Park on Wednesday 8th February, however, due to adverse weather conditions it was abandoned. All seven courses have welcomed the TBA’s sponsorship offer. Robert Waley-Cohen, Chairman of the TBA National Hunt Committee added “The NH Committee felt that it was important to recognise and reward those courses who already support Mares Only races and we are delighted to encourage them to continue with this.”
Dates for additional mares races set for the coming year are as follows:
Aintree – Friday 18th May
Cartmel – Saturday 21st July (to be confirmed)
Towcester – Wednesday 10th October, Mares Only Novice Hurdle
Ludlow – Thursday 25th October, Mares Only Novice Hurdle
Lingfield – Tuesday 13th November (to be confirmed), Mares Only NH Flat race
Doncaster – November or December 2012
Uttoxeter – November or December 2012

Annual National Hunt Stallion Parade 2011
These stallions paraded:
BLACK SAM BELLAMY (IRE), BOLLIN ERIC (GB), CROSSPEACE (IRE), GEORDIELAND (FR), MALINAS (GER), MIDNIGHT LEGEND (GB), PASTERNAK, PHOENIX REACH (IRE), RAINBOW HIGH (GB), RECHARGE (IRE), SAGAMIX (FR), SCHIAPARELLI (GER), TOBOUGG (IRE).
In its 10th anniversary year at Cheltenham, the TBA National Hunt Stallion Parade attracted a huge crowd of breeders and enthusiasts alike around the Parade Ring to see some of the country’s leading British based First Season and Proven National Hunt stallions, thus providing the ideal opportunity for mare owners to view and compare prospective stallions at one venue. Following the parade they took the opportunity to talk directly to the stallions’ connections in the TBA marquee, which was well supported throughout the day.
Spectators enjoyed the complimentary booklet, kindly compiled by Weatherbys GSB, giving further details of the stallions, as well as the excellent commentaries throughout the parade by Henry Beeby and Stephen Hadley.
A Silent Auction of nominations, generously donated by the stallions’ connections to the TBA to further its National Hunt initiatives, was well supported with seven of the 14 nominations being sold on the day. If you would like to purchase any of the remaining nominations, please contact Pauline Stoddart at Stanstead House.
The TBA is grateful for the continued support of the British European Breeders’ Fund, British Bloodstock Marketing, and Doncaster Bloodstock Sales who again kindly donated the stallion handlers’ jackets.
